Order of the Garter


On this date in our family history . . . the 23rd day of April . . . in the year 1348 . . . the founding of the Order of the Garter by King Edward III of England is announced on St George's Day . . . this King Edward the father of Edward the Black Prince . . . as well as father of John of Gaunt . . . who is believed to be a 16th great-grandpa to our Josephine (1842-1899) . . . who is a 2nd great-grandma to the Keeper of this family history blog . . .

The Gentleman's Magazine:

"THE ORDER OF THE GARTER NE of the very few stories or legends which do duty for English history with most of us is that of the foundation of the Order of the Garter by Edward III who took occasion from an unfortunate decheance of a certain Countess of Salisbury at a Court ball in 1348 to find both a name and a motto for his new order of knighthood Five hundred years have passed since then but this ancient Corporation has survived all manner of changes of dynasty of religion of manners and illustrates with unimpaired force the idea of nobility in its best and highest sense which is inseparable from a monarchical form of government As a singularly interesting and somewhat out of the way illustration of our natural English liking for antiquity and nobility we desire to present a slight sketch of the history of the Order of the Garter to"

"banquet was to be held on the day following a requiem was to be sung for the souls of the faithful deceased No knight of the Order was ever to pass near Windsor without coming to the chapel and there was to put on his mantle and hear mass Edward made a foundation at the chapel of thirteen secular canons and thirteen vicars and also of twenty six veteran knights who were to be maintained there and were to serve God continually in prayer The kings of England were to be perpetual sovereigns of the Order There were twenty five knights founders amongst whom was of course the Black Prince with his principal knights Chandos Sir James Audley and the Captale de Buche They were nearly all young men four of them were even under twenty and ten under thirty Edward III himself"
